STENDHAL SCARLET AND BLACK TRANSLATED BY MARGARET R. B. SHAW
To Stendhal (1783–1842) the novel was a mirror of life reflecting ‘the blue of the skies and the mud of the roads’. Scarlet and Black, his greatest novel, resolutely looks outward into the France of the decades after Waterloo; it has highs and low-lifes, its Royalists and Liberals, its Jacobins and Jesuits. Against this crowded backdrop, we follow the figure of Julien Sorel, a social climber who rises from nothing — a hero whose tragic weakness is to mistake the shadow for the substance. Stendhal’s vision led him to be regarded as the first great author in the line of the angre of Romantics, set the pattern for the realistic novelists such as Flaubert and Zola.
