The Man of Property — John Galsworthy (Collins Classics edition)
Date Published 1966
Ivor Brown says in his Introduction to this edition: `It is only the greatest writers who can portray humanity ... with such enduring results.” The story is dominated throughout by the Forsytes—that formidable family whose sense of property is developed to the detriment of other emotions, who gauge success in life by evidences of material wealth, and who exert such influence over all associated with them. These people offer wide scope for characterisation and Galsworthy depicts them with the vividness and depth of feeling which have earned him his place among the great writers of the century.
This is the first of the Forsyte novels and focuses chiefly upon the unhappy marriage between Soames Forsyte, the “Man of Property,” and Irene. Opening with the engagement of Jolyon Forsyte’s granddaughter, June, to the architect Philip Bosinney, the story reveals the general uneasiness of the family over the situation between Soames and his wife. Believing that a change of environment may improve their relationship, Soames engages Bosinney to build a country house for him, but he fails to foresee the outcome of such a venture. In this incomparable study of an upper middle-class Victorian family, Galsworthy justifies his long-established popularity with the reading public.
************
The most prized item in Soames Forstye`s collection of beautiful things is his wife, the enigmatic Irene. But when she falls in love with Bosinney, a penniless architect who utterly rejects the Forsyte values, their affair touches off a series of events which can only end in disgrace and disaster.John Galsworthy tackles his theme of the demise of the upper-middle classes with irony and compassion.
