Különös házasság

Kálmán Mikszáth
Testvériség-Egység, 1953 - 374 страница
Különös házasság
(Magyar klasszikusok)
Mikszáth Kálmán válogatott művei
This is the second Mikszath novel I`ve read (after St. Peter`s Umbrella), and being used to his anecdotal, folksy style with a lot of provincial Hungarian detail, I enjoyed it a lot more. Mikszath has a bit of a Dickensian feel, but with strong fairytale-esque elements, and an ending line that made me think of Treasure Island. The strange marriage of the title is based on real events. Janos Buttler, a young student happily engaged to a girl from his own town, meets Baron Dory on his journey home. Before Janos knows what is happening, Dory forces him into a sham marriage with Dory`s own daughter Mariska. The priest who performs the ceremony is the very rogue that got Mariska into the position where she has to get married before she, you know, starts showing. The lengths Dory and the clergy go to to make sure Janos can`t annul the marriage would be absurd were it not a true case of a man who spent most of his life trying to obtain a legal divorce so he could marry his sweetheart. The beginning is a bit slow, but Mikszath creates charming scenes, and once I got into it, I was riveted. The characterizations aren`t much more than archetypes, but still appealing. I didn`t expect such a poignant ending. (less)
