56528) WHAT IT MEANS TO BE JEW , by Charles E. Shulman , Reconstructionist Press New York 1965
, Harold C. Case, President of Boston Uni versity, says in his introduction to WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A JEW, `Charles Shulman has not sought to lull anyone into com placency but rather to summon his readers to re-examination, renewal and revival.` This book is a full-length portrait of the modern Jew. The Jew, reading it, will renew his pride in his heritage. The non-Jew will get a picture of the modern Jew, scion of a great people and inheritor of the per petual dream of a better social order on earth.

The book is divided into five sections. First, Rabbi Shulman writes of the Jewish tradition-the advantages and disadvan tages of being a Jew-and discusses the Jewish character; the philosophy and litera ture of the Jew. Then he tells of Jewish personalities who have been leaders of their people in this century and writes of the State of Israel and the problems that it is now facing. The last two sections of the book deal with Jews as a cultural force in the twentieth century and with the Jew in relation to gentiles. The book gives new insights even to a close student of the Jew ish world. Mordecai M. Kaplan writes that WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A JEw is `an infor mative and edifying description of the problems, movements and personalities that embody the dynamism of the contemporary American-Jewish scene.`
