`Major Thomas Thorn was supposed to be a coward. The five men under him were supposed to be heroes. The woman they were guarding was supposed to be a slut. In 1958, Glendon Swarthout (1918-1992) published his first novel, The Came to Cordura, made into a feature film starring Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth the following year. In all, six of Swarthout`s books would become films, the others being 7th Cavalry, Where the Boys Are, Bless the Beasts and the Children, The Shootist and A Christmas to Remember. Nominated twice for Pulitzers and once for an O. Henry, he earned two Silver Spur Awards for Best Western Novel (The Shootist and The Homesman), a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Western Writers of America (1991), and posthumous induction into the Western Writers Hall of Fame.
