The greatest allied blunder of World War II occurred not in any of the famous theaters of battle but at the bottom of Europe, in Yugoslavia. In December 1943 Winston Churchill made the fateful decision to abandon the pro-Democratic national resistance army in Axis-occupied Yugoslavia and to support instead the Communist guerrilla forces and their leader, Josip Broz Tito. The consequences of this choice were profound and far-reaching. Tito took the weapons supplied by the Allies. Some of them were used against the Germans, but the greater part was used against his own countrymen, especially the pro-Western resistance forces led by General Draža Mihailović. When the war was over, Tito was in power and Yugoslavia firmly in place as a strategic part of the Communist bloc.
How were Yugoslavia and its pro-Western forces betrayed? The full story has never been told until now. David Martin, the world’s foremost scholar on the subject, fully uncovered the tragic tale in secret British files that were only recently and inadvertently declassified. He reveals that Churchill, and others, were quite simply deceived—by Communist moles and sympathizers who had infiltrated the military intelligence services. The prime mover behind the entire effort was a member of the famous Cambridge spy set that included
Kim Philby, Guy Burgess, Donald Maclean,
and Anthony Blunt. Martin names this
“Fifth Man”: he was James Klugmann, by
all accounts the most brilliant and enterprising mole of them all. Here, for the first time,
is the story of his conspiracy and its devastating success.
David Martin has had a distinguished career as a journalist, political analyst, organizer of humanitarian and antitotalitarian causes, and as a staffer on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Mr. Martin is the author of two previous books about Draža Mihailović: Ally Betrayed and Patriot or Traitor. He lives with his wife in Arlington, Virginia.
