During the last quarter of the sixteenth century, Spain was the strongest of European powers. In the New World, Spanish rule was practically absolute from Labrador to the Rio de la Plata on the Atlantic side and from the Isthmus south on the western coast of South America; in fact a Papal grant had divided the American continent between Portugal and Spain. The arrogant claim of the Spanish Crown was contested only by a small French set.

Caribbean Sea
West Indies -- History
West Indies
THE ROMANCE of the Caribbean Sea and the surrounding tropical land long held a fascination for Francis Russell Hart. Immediately upon his graduation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he went as an engineer to the West Indies. Shortly afterward, becoming interested in the development of Central and South America, he built the little Cartagena Magdalena Railroad through Columbia, which helped open up that territory.
Mr. Hart gives a vivid picture of the vanished buccaneers of the Spanish Main.
Having spent so much of his life in engineering and business in the West Indies, he was thoroughly acquainted with that part of the world and because of his long association with the Caribbean territory was regarded as an authority on the history of that area.
He is the author also of The Disaster of Darien and The Siege of Havana.
This special edition of ADMIRALS OF THE CARIBBEAN by Francis Russell Hart bas been made available to the Armed Forces of the United States through an arrangement with the original publisher, Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston.
