This is the first work yet published to present both a concise history of the socialist movement and a critical analysis of its present-day theoretical apparatus. As such it is a suitable basic text for undergraduates and graduates alike, as well as a book for the general reader.
In his customary stimulating style, Mr Lichtheim outlines socialist and communist history from the Industrial Revolution and the French Revolution down to the present day. Marxism, Fabianism, Anarchism, Leninism and Maoism - all make their appearance within the context of an historical study centred on, but not confined to, Europe and North America. In particular, the intellectual roots of Leninism are traced back to the Russian Populist tradition founded.by Herzen, Bakunin, Chernyshevsky and others. The German social democratic movement appears as a current within a broader stream which also encompassed revolutionary socialism, anarchism and syndicalism in France, Italy and Spain, as well as Fabian Socialism in Britain and other English-speaking countries. A concluding chapter deals with the theoretical and practical problems of contemporary socialism in advanced industrial countries, both east and west of the political divide. The author suggests that the social-democratic and communist movements have both come up against unsolved problems stemming from the growth of technocratic tendencies and the emergence of the technical intelligentsia as the key stratum within the new industrial and scientific culture of modern society.
