One of the fastest developing countries in the world, Iran provides a stage for profound, often dramatic changes. Its remarkable transformation can be said to have begun at the turn of the century in 1906, with the Constitutional Movement associated with the rise to power of Riza Shah. With the exploitation of the country’s oil resources this movement has accelerated under the present political leadership of H.I.M. Shahanshah Aryamehr.
As a consequence of the increasing importance of Iran on the international scene, much more attention is now being paid to the political, economic, strategic and social factors which are influencing these developments.
The purpose of the present volume is to concentrate on the problems and policies of the present dynasty with particular reference to the last twenty years. Each of the eight contributors is an expert in his specialised field. A general historical background is given in three introductory chapters, followed by more detailed chapters on the oil industry, economic affairs, social conditions, foreign relations and a survey of future strategy.
While books have been published on a number of different aspects of Iran, the present volume aims at providing a comprehensive and objective consideration of the major contemporary issues. In linking these with the historical narrative it is hoped to obtain a deeper appreciation of the forces working for change or continuity, and so obtain a better understanding of Iran as it is today.
