Tito - perhaps the greatest European Communist outside Russia
His qualities of courage, independence and humanity won the liking and admiration of observers of every political creed. In Yugoslavia he is simply a hero.
Based on published records and private interviews, this biography traces the astonishing career of the young Croatian peasant who was apprenticed as a metal-worker, involved (as a prisoner of war) in the Russian Revolution and eventually emerged as the leader of the Yugoslavian Partisans in the Second World War.
Phyllis Auty`s account shows how the military genius with which Tito relentlessly harried the Germans was matched in peacetime by a unique gift for political leadership. Her astute analysis both uncovers the real man lurking behind the personality cult of one of the world`s leading statesmen and suggests exactly what Tito has come to epitomize in the eyes of his own nation and of the world at large.
