`An excellent, even-handed, up-to-date survey of modern Japanese history.`
—John W. Dower, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
`Hane`s text provides a richness of detail about modern Japan that is unique among contemporary works, offering fresh and provocative insights into the less-studied corners of the culture—the position of women, peasants, and Koreans, among others. His treatment of recent developments is better than in any other general history now available.`
—James L. Huffman, Wittenberg University
In this newly revised third edition of his thoughtful and readable survey, Mikiso Hane presents the essential facts of modern Japanese history. He integrates political events with the cultural, economic, and intellectual activities of each period—from Tokugawa to the present—and he is sensitive to the conditions of life in all strata of the population. The new edition covers a variety of important developments through the 1990s, giving special consideration to how traditional Japanese modes of thought and behavior have affected recent developments in such areas as U.S.—Japanese relations, the status of women, and education. To provide background for his study of modern Japan, Hane includes a summary of early Japanese history that emphasizes the institutions and systems that molded the nature of Japanese society. Hane has also revised and updated the last several chapters and the selected bibliography as well.
Mikiso Hane is professor of history at Knox College and has written extensively on Japan for more than twenty-five years.
