No-one will ever be so favourably placed to write the history of the Greek Civil War as C M Woodhouse. As Commander of the Allied Military Mission to the Greek Guerrillas in German-occupied
Greece in 1943-4, he had to hold an uneasy balance between the Communist and Government sides. Against a background of conflicting Communist doctrine, shifting foreign alliances, territorial disputes and personality differences, the three-round Communist struggle for Greece began in 1941.
The First Round — the German occupation of Greece (1941-4) when the National Liberation Front, Siantos` resistance movement , attempted to regain control of the country and overthrow the monarchy. The Second Round — December 1944, when the Communists, trying to seize power at the end of the German occupation, were frustrated by the intervention of British forces. The Third Round— (from 1946) the most protracted part of the struggle, whose fortunes were marked by US intervention in place of the retiring British, fact-finding missions by the UN, and the shift from guerrilla tactics to conventional warfare.
Why were the Communists unable to overthrow a succession of feeble Athens governments? The author shows the KKE (Communist Party of Greece) weakened by internal feuding, divided by dissensions over (for example) the disposal of Macedonia, and overcome by the strength of the US forces.
Basing his research on interviews with prominent survivors from both sides, access to privileged documents and his own unique experience, Mr Woodhouse, analysing objectively the characters, ideologies and events behind one of the longest and most bitter civil wars of modern times, has written the definitive history.


C. M. Woodhouse is recognized as a leading expert on modern Greek history. He took a classics double-first at Oxford. In 1943 he was Colonel in command of the Allied Military Mission to the Greek Guerrillas in German-occupied Greece; in 1945 he served in the British Embassy in Athens; in 1946 he was Secretary-General to the Allied Mission for Observing Greek Elections.
Because of his unique position in being both an authority and persona grata to both sides, it is unlikely that anyone is now or will ever again be, so fortunately placed to write this book.
Distinguished in other fields as well, he has served in four Parliaments as MP for Oxford, and has been President of the Classical Association. He has been Assistant Secretary to the Nuffield Foundation, Director-General of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, joint Under-Secretary of State at the Home
Office, and a Fellow of Colleges in both Oxford and Cambridge. Mr Woodhouse`s publications on Greek history include The Greek War of Independence (1952), The Battle of Navarino (1965), The Story of
Modern Greece (1968), The Philhellenes (1969), and many articles, broadcasts, translations and forewords.
