In this original and engrossing book, an anthropologist and an art historian have collaborated on a unique study of the vicissitudes of the Native Americans since the arrival of the first Europeans. Their method has been to juxtapose non-Native visual images of the original Americans with the actual artifacts depicted in these paintings, drawings, engravings, and photographs. This tells us a great deal about the culture—political, economic, social, physical— of the individual or the scene portrayed; we learn whether the representation is accurate, and if not, why not; and we gather much about the attitudes of observer and subject.
The changing images of the Native American have spanned a wide range. As the authors observe, `The initial perception of the Indian as an exotic primitive living in a state of nature was replaced by a view more consonant with economic reality. As frontiers were pushed westward, the American Indian became socially, politically, and economically expendable. . . . [The images created by the Euro-Americans] were often paradoxical stereotypes: bloodthirsty savage and heroic warrior; hopeless drunkard in need of protection; victim of deceit, corruption, and greed, grudgingly but philosophically accepting his fate. In his many guises, the Indian influenced the continent`s political and cultural history, as well as its art.`
Every one of the eight major Native American culture groups in the United States is encompassed in this volume. Maps locate each area within the country and show the location of the tribes in the area. The climate, geographical features, and common life-styles of each group are sketched in, along with a brief political history. Works by noted artists — among them George Catlin, Albert Bierstadt, Winslow Hoemer, Charles Russell, and John Sloan — as well as by scientist-artists such as John White and Karl Bodmer, paired with the actual objects or people shown in the art, yield fascinating information: how the placement of sticks in a tipi identifies the tribe that made it; how a girl`s hairstyle reveals her nuptial status; how we deduce what food a people ate from the kind of basket they used. Rare documentary photographs by Mathew Brady, Charles F. Lummis, Eadweard Muybridge, and others preserve forgotten ard abandoned rituals.
The unusual images in Native Americans constitute a fascinating record of a large and troubling chapter of American history. In our own day, paintings by such varied creators as Georgia O`Keeffe, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol reflect the continuing effort to understand and redress grievous ard far-reaching wrongs.
