komentar o knjizi sa amazona:
it does provide a reasonably comprehensive history of the ship, although since it was published in 1981 it`s obviously not up to date with the state of the museum ship as it is today. There are also lots of nice pictures of the ship in its working days in the first half of the book, including quite a few I haven`t seen before, including a rare one of the ship after having its engines removed. I also liked the diagram of the engines and running gear that replaced the original machinery in about 1850, as I`ve been wondering what they looked like by comparison. One thing I didn`t like is that a lot of the pictures are unattributed, or rather they are simply said to come from Ewan Corlett`s personal collection, which tells one nothing about where they actually originated from, so that readers are left in the dark in terms of copyright status should they want to reproduce some of these images.
The second half of the book is mostly pictures of the salvage of the vessel and of the early stages of its restoration (which wasn`t finished at the time this book was published). Interesting enough but one gets the feeling they are being used as filler to a degree. The info in the book also looks accurate, except that they couldn`t resist guilding the lily to a degree when they claimed the Great Britain made `an extremely good time` in its first transatlantic crossing. That is nonsense as the ship made only 9 1/2 knots, almost a full knot and a half below the record. The ship had multiple design flaws when it first entered service, but these are mostly glossed over.
Overall though, this book will give you a good idea of what the ship looked like inside and out, and will provide a pretty reasonable, and reasonably accurate, record of its service and of life aboard the vessel.
