This book left a VERY STRONG impression on my very good friend when he was at the age where most kids are reading Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss. As a little boy, he owned a copy and it was one of his favorite books.
My friend was very excited when he saw this book online, and I let him order a copy. My friend is a very sweet, but very strange man, and was very impressionable as a child. He has always had a very strong sense of the deep cruelty and corruption of humanity, (possibly partially due to this book) and this has made him a somewhat bitter angry and cynical person.
This is a picture book that children should probably not see, unless one wants them to develop from an early age, a similar impression of humanity`s potential for cruelty.
I could scarcely stand to look at many of the pictures, and am still haunted by the brief glances I made at some of the extremely graphic depictions of torture...but I AM sensitive.
