Alan Moorehead was born in Melbourne in 1910. Educated at Scotch College, Melbourne, and Melbourne University, he served as foreign correspondent of the Daily Express from 1936 to 1939, one of his first assignments being the Spanish Civil War. During the Second World War he was a war correspondent in the Middle and Far East and in much of Europe, and was awarded the O.B.E. His other books include African Trilogy (1944), Montgomery (1946), Gallipoli (1956), which won the Sunday Times 1956 Book Prize and the Duff Cooper Memorial Award, The Russian Revolution (1958) and Cooper`s Creek (1963). No Room in the Ark (1959) and The Fatal Impact (1966) are both in Penguins. He has also published The Blue Nile, a companion volume to The White Nile, about Egypt, the Sudan and Ethiopia. His latest book, Darwin and the `Beagle`, was published in 1969. He is married to Lucy Milner, a former Women`s Page editors of the Daily Express, and they have two sons and a daughter.

They are ghosts of many nationalities: the Khedive Ismail, the Mahdi, savage King Mutesa of Buganda, and a bevy of Arab slave-traders; there is Richard Burton, the restless, inscrutable scholar; his dull but vindicated opponent, Speke; Livingstone, the indomitable Scot; Baker and his beautiful Hungarian wife; the bumptious American journalist, Stanley, who searched for Livingstone and later for the German scientist, Emin Pasha.
