`Five Approaches of Literary Criticism Contemporary criticism often seems a maze of specialized tastes, tactics, and terminology. This refreshingly clear arrangement of critical methods according to five general categories provides the reader with a standard against which to measure his opinions of literary works and gives him insights into the most forceful trends in the literary criticism of today and the past. Selecting three examples of each of his five approaches-Moral, Psychological, Sociological, Formalistic, and Archetypal-Dr. Scott introduces each essay with a brisk, provocative analysis of its origins and development, its nature, and its limitations. For the benefit of the reader stimulated to more extensive inquiry, he provides bibliographies that further illustrate, define, or quarrel with each approach.

Wilbur Scott, Professor of English at New College of Hofstra University, received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He is the co-editor, with R. W. Short, of the anthology Main Lines of American Literature. His diverse academic activities have ranged from a Fulbright lectureship in Finland to helping to set up several Ford Foundation-sponsored educational television series, `The Arts Around Us` and `American Art Today`.`
