`The Symbolist Movement in Literature is considered a literary classic. First published in 1899, and later revised and enlarged in 1908 and 1919, this fascinating book by the noted English critic opened a new epoch in literature. It is a pioneering study of great historical importance, the first book in English to analyze the theory and practice of the French symbolists-Mallarmé, de Nerval, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Laforgue-thus introducing this radical group of writers to English and American readers.

The influence of The Symbolist Movement on the young writers of its time is apparent in the early careers of this century`s two greatest poets-Yeats and Eliot. Yeats, to whom the book was dedicated, acknowledged Mallarmé`s impact on him through Symons, and T. S. Eliot has written: `I owe Mr. Symons a great debt. But for having read his book I should not, in the year 1908, have heard of Laforgue and Rimbaud; I should probably not have begun to read Verlaine; but for reading Verlaine, I should not have heard of Corbière. So the Symons book is one of those which have affected the course of life."
