"To write about modern English fiction is also, in some measure, to attempt to define what it means to be English at the present time.` Bernard Bergonzi, Professor of English at the University of Warwick, looks at the present condition of the English and the American novel in terms of their cultural context. After considering whether, in economic terms, the novel in its present form can survive at all, he examines the work of such writers as Evelyn Waugh, Angus Wilson and Kingsley Amis in England and Ralph Ellison, John Barth and Thomas Pynchon in America. He sees the English novel as still essentially traditional in form and liberal in ideology in contrast with the American novel which starts from very different assumptions and tends towards the apocalyptic. A final chapter speculates on what may be `beyond fiction`, and considers the work of some recent novelists including B.S. Johnson, Doris Lessing and Margaret Drabble.`
