`This book is a comprehensive and extremely well documented study of the whole field of literary criticism.

Professor Daiches begins by examining the philosophical foundations of criticism. Quoting Plato, Aristotle, Dryden, Johnson, Coleridge and other major critics, he describes and assesses some of the answers to the question `What is literature?` He considers the significance of Plato`s objections to poetry; the Aristotelian idea of `Catharsis`; Sir Philip Sidney`s `Defense of Poesie`, and the idea of the poet as `maker`. He goes on to discuss the critical judgement and perceptions of Dryden, Dr Johnson, Coleridge, Shelley and Arnold. Coming down to the present day he examines `the proper sphere of poetry` and `the poet and his medium`, referring specially to critical statements of the American poet John Crowe Ransom.

Part Two-Practical Criticism - deals with the various types of criticism that have been written on particular works; in Part Three Professor Daiches examines the relationship between criticism and the various spheres of learning, considering the place of scholarship in criticism and the effects of historical and biographical knowledge on the critic`s convictions. He discusses in detail the relationship between criticism and psychology, sociology and the cultural context of a certain period.
