"I have read The Literary Situation, and I don`t see how anyone who is interested in the writing of our time could fail to find it completely absorbing. Malcolm Cowley`s `Natural History of the American Writer` is a most original conception that no one else could have worked out with his sympathy for all sorts and conditions of the literary tribe. Not to mention the breadth of his exact knowledge. So far as I am concerned, this is the book of the year in a particular realm that concerns me deeply, and I couldn`t begin to specify the bits I found exciting in the discussion of the `folkways of literature.` But I might especially mention the analysis of the young professor`s mind and how it is conditioned for criticism, the treatment of the `literary stock exchange` and the analysis of the Southern mind and why conditions of life in the South are favorable to novelists. The approach throughout is absolutely fresh, especially perhaps in `The `New` Fiction: A Tidy Room in Bedlam,` and Malcolm Cowley`s whole discussion of the contemporary novel will interest people in several fields and will be cited by sociologists as well as literary critics.`
