TG224) This book is intended primarily for foreign students of English, though it should be helpful to others also. The basis of it is those verbal compounds like `to fall out with someone` or `to put up with something`, the meaning of which could not be deduced from a knowledge of the meaning of the individual words. To these have been added non-compounds used in special senses or having grammatical peculiarities. The author`s aim has been to provide, within this field, a guide to ordinary written and spoken English; consequently technical terms have, as a rule, been omitted; and so have many of those so-called `idiomatic phrases` which one often finds listed in textbooks for the foreign student but which are, in fact, seldom used by native English speakers. The alphabetical arrangement of the present book makes reference quite easy. In the case of each entry the meaning of the idiom is explained, then follow illustrative sentences. The student is told whether a particular idiom can be used in both the active and the passive voice, and whether it is literary, colloquial, slang, or acceptable in both written and spoken English. English Verbal Idioms, which is a companion volume to the same author`s Current English Usage, will be found indispensable to those who wish to acquire a knowledge of English as it is actually written and spoken in Great Britain.
