Each essay in this anthology is modern, not only because it was written after 1945, but because it reveals the impact of the Atomic Age on a sensitive and articulate spokesman. The essay is an ancient form, going back at least to Hellenistic Greece and reaching an early peak in the “Essais” of Montaigne. But from the “Characters” of Theophrastus to next week’s issue of “The New Yorker” the essay has always had two distinguishing features: it is addressed to an audience not restricted to specialists, and it shows, either directly or indirectly, a mind in the process of thinking - hence the word “essay” with its connotations of attempting, or tentativeness. An essay can deal with any subject; it can range from the stiffly formal to the casually informal; it can be short or long, gay or sad, colorful or drab, scientific or mystical; in fact, it can be, and has been, any and all of these in a variety of effective combinations. Even so, the modern essay has qualities which set it apart from its predecessors. Almost every contemporary essay with any literary pretensions is argumentative: the author has a case to make or an axe to grind. He may be extremely informative, but he is almost never dispassionate. As a result, his emphasis is more on persuading than instructing. Probably this has always been true; it is now conspicuous. Second, it is difficult to put contemporary essays into such categories as impersonal/personal, neutral/slanted, analytic/descriptive. The large majority are eclectic and fit badly, if at all, into conventional subdivisions. Finally, the essay of today has certain stylistic tendencies that separate it from the past. Following each essay presented here is a short biographical statement about the author, a résumé of the important rhetorical devices and stylistic features that characterize the selection, and a few deliberately provocative questions about its style and content. An Appendix provides a brief sampling of the traditional essay in English
