INTRODUCTION
GANSU in China`s northwestern hinterland, is the communication hub of the world-famous avots the central government under the First Emperor of the Oin Dynasty who unified the whole country. The name from Ganzhou (now Zhangye) and Suzhou (now Jiuquan), and came under the jurisdiction Silk Road, and a strategic arca of the current socialist modernization construction, deties region was given its present name in 1281 by Emperor Shi Zu of the Yuan Dynasty.
A land of many nationalities, Gansu possesses vast territories, complex natural conditions and tick natural resources. Its total area measures 454.000 square kilometers, including 2.5 hundred million ma slopes, 2.05 hundred million mu grasslands, one hundred million mu deserts 54 million m forests, and 3 milion mu tillable land. Under the provincial government are eight prefectures, three municipalitie and 81 counties (cities and districts). The 19.75 million population includes more than 10 nationalities Han, Hui, Tibetan, Mongolian, Yugur, Dongxiang, Salar, Bonan, Kazak, Manchu, Tu, Korean, and Uyga with Dongxiang, Yugur, and Bonan live exclusively in the region.
The topography of Gansu is long and narrow, 1,655-km from southeast to northwest and 25-53% from north to south. Situated at the area where the Loess Plateau, Inner Mongolian Plateau, and ingh Tibet Plateau meet, Gansu is crisscrossed by river valleys. The Qinling Mountains is in the south, the Longshan Mountains in the east, the Xiqing Mountains in the southwest, the Qilian, Heli, and Longshou mountains along the Hexi Corridor, and the Zhuyu, Niaoshu, and Maxian mountains in the center, Stand ing 1,000-3,000 meters above sea level, Gansu can be divided into six natural regions-the Longnan hilly region, Longdong highland, Longzhong highland, Hexi Corridor, Qilian mountainous region, and Be shan mountainous region-in the Changjiang, Huanghe and continental river valleys. The mean temperature of the province is 4°C-14°C. The lowest temperature in the coldest month of January ranges-14°C to 28°C from the northwest to the southeast; the highest temperature in the hottest month of July stands between 16°C and 26°C, from the Qilian Mountains to the Bailong River valley. At some places the temperaturn varies greatly between day and night, and hence the saying, `Fur coat for the morning, and gauze for noontime. In the evening, you eat a watermelon by the fire.` The climate varies in different regions. Some are spring all the year round, some are under snow in August; some are overgrown with trees and flowen. some are sparsely dotted with clusters of shrubs. All these contribute to a variegated, beautiful landscape
Gansu is rich in mineral deposits. Of the 61 varieties that have been determined, 26 are metals and rare metals, including nickel, platinum, copper, cobalt, chromium, lead, and zinc. There are also consider able coal and oil deposits. The Huanghe River is an inexhaustible source of energy. Snow melt from the Qilian Mountains irrigates extensive plots of rich soil in the Hexi Corridor. The Loess Plateau is vast and fertile. The Longnan hill region is mild, producing tons of paddy rice. A major animal husbandry center Gansu boasts vast stretches of lush forests and boundless fine pasturelands. It yields wheat, maize, millet, and beans, as well as a variety of industrial crops. Its medicinal herbs, Chinese angelica, Codenepus pilosula, membranous milk vetch, and rhubarb sell well inside and outside the country. Local produce like facai, day lily, Auricularia auricula-judae, pteridium, lily, and sweet melons are also known far and wide.
Besides, there are the rare animals: giant panda, golden monkey, takin, snow leopard, etc. Gansu has a long history and a splendid culture. Man lived and laboured on this land 100,000 years...

Gansu (kin: 甘肅, Gānsù) je provincija (od 1911) u severnom delu središnje Kine[1] površine 425.800 km². Broj stanovnika preko 25 miliona. Na krajnjem severu se graniči sa Mongolijom. Autonomne oblasti Unutrašnja Mongolija na severoistoku, Ningsja i pokrajina Šensi na istoku, pokrajine Sičuan i Ćinghaj južno i jugozapadno i Autonomna oblast Sinkjang zapadno. Glavni grad pokrajine Gansu je Landžou; veći gradovi Jumen, Jinsing, Linsja, Tjanšuj i Pinglijang. Nalazi se na važnom koridoru - stari Put svile između istočne Kine i srednje Azije. Duž severne granice su ostaci zapadnog dela Kineskog zida.

Gansu[a] is a province in Northwestern China. Its capital and largest city is Lanzhou, in the southeastern part of the province. The seventh-largest administrative district by area at 453,700 square kilometres (175,200 sq mi), Gansu lies between the Tibetan and Loess plateaus and borders Xinjiang and Qinghai to the west, Sichuan to the south, Shaanxi to the east, and Inner Mongolia, Ningxia and Mongolia`s Govi-Altai Province to the north. The Yellow River passes through the southern part of the province. Part of Gansu`s territory is located in the Gobi Desert. The Qilian mountains are located in the south of the Province.
