`Introduction
This is the second edition of `The Republic of Macedonia`, a publication intended for foreign readers. Following the example of similar national publications, the attempt has been made to present the most relevant pieces of information and data on Macedonia while respecting the principles of academic objectivity and selectivity. The publication covers history, nature and mineral resources, the national economy, the functioning of the political system, social, cultural and academic life, international relations and the country`s achievements in many other areas.
Macedonia is one of those countries established after the collapse of communism where significant changes have been taking place in the past few years. The place of Macedonia in a group of twenty countries-called `the Challenge of the Nineties` is shown through the data given in the `Emerging Market Economies Report` by IMD, an international institute of management development based in Lausanne, Switzerland, prepared in cooperation with the World Economic Forum (WEF). On the basis of 200 criteria grouped in eight competition factors, this report is another trustworthy confirmation of Macedonia`s developmental possibilities.
The picture of what is known as `the Macedonian challenge` en-compasses several features. To begin with, Macedonia has won its sovereignty, independence and international recognition in a peaceful and legitimate way. It is also the first country in the world where the United Nations Organization has implemented the policy of preventive diplomacy.
