When Shirley and Jimmy Faure retired from `proper` yachting they decided to buy oneof those big, capable-looking steel motor cruisers - as typically Dutch in their way as a botter or a tjalk - and set off to explore the waterways of the Netherlands. At the same time Shirley rediscovered her dormant talent for drawing and painting and set to, depicting what she saw as they travelled around. The result is this book, which beautifully captures in pencil-sketch and watercolour the unique charm of the Dutch landscape and structures - gabled houses, lifting bridges, windmills - as well as delicately executed details - bollards, anchors - of their canal-faring lifestyle. It is a beautifully produced book which would make a very acceptable souvenir of a Dutch boating holiday. --Classic Boat magazine February 2008

This is a delightful book, a travelogue rather than a pilot, giving the artist/author`s impressions of cruising through the Dutch canals in a steel motor yacht. To say it is beautifully illustrated would be an understatement. Using a clever balance of words and pictures, it captures the atmosphere of this unique environment, recording the history, architecture, nature, culture and lifestyle as they pass by, through sketches, reproductions of finely detailed watercolours and caricatures. If you haven`t been to Holland it will whet your appetite and provide a very good guide as to where to start. If you have been it will bring back memories of `life in the slow lane` along the canals and could serve as a valuable keepsake. --RNSARoyal Naval Sailing Association Summer 2008 magazine
