Preparing for War
"Every picture`, says Julian Symons in his introduction, `tells a story, and every story may be true, but the truth it tells is partial and single.` In two decades which gave birth to so many myths it would have been easy to exploit the legend in terms of period charm rather than to give, as this photographic survey does, a sense of the quality of life for people of every age and class and in a diversity of situations between the ending of one World War in 1919 and the outbreak of another only 20 years later.
In the 187 photographs selected and annotated by the novelist and critic Julian Symons, most of the conflicting images of these decades are represented; for this is a record not only of the famous (Churchill, Chamberlain, Baldwin, the kings: George V, Edward VII and George VI) but also a social history of people at work (and out of it) - women in the Lancashire cotton mills, pea-shellers in Covent Garden, miners from the Durham and Welsh coalfields, hop-pickers in Kent, shipyard workers on Clydebank and people at play (watching Dixie Dean at Wembley or Walter Lindrum and Tom Newman playing snooker, hiking, driving to the Derby or picnicking at Henley).
The Great Occasions are, of course, here recorded (the Armistice celebrations of 1919, the Wembley exhibition of 1924, the Great Strike, the Jarrow March, the Abdication, the Spanish Civil War demonstrations, the Munich negotiations and the declaration of war), as also are the less memorable moments which, nevertheless, put their stamp on the era: Hobbs and Sutcliffe opening at Leeds for England against the Australians in 1926, the `phantom` from the Surrealist exhibition of 1936, C.B. Cochrane`s 1930 Revue (with an appreciative George Bernard Shaw in the audience) or Box and Cox being transmitted from the Baird television studio.
Whether as a reminder for older readers, or as a re-creation for younger ones, the book`s impact is equally convincing.`
