Writer-longshoreman-savant, Eric Hoffer became a nationwide celebrity as a result of his CBS-TV interview with Eric Sevareid when, as Mr. Sevareid says in his Introduction, “He made millions of confused and troubled Americans feel very much better about their country. He pulled aside the veils of supposed sophistication and, in new ways, showed them again the old truths about America and why they remain alive and valid....”

Hoffer spent his early years as a blind boy in New York; later his sight mysteriously regained, he worked as a placer miner, migrant worker and longshoreman on the West Coast. As a drifter in California, he learned to write and his original ideas and biting aphoristic style won him a devoted following with the 1951 publication of The True Believer and the 1967 publication of Temper of Our Time.

Calvin Tomkins’ intimate biography, which at last gives Hoffer fans insight into this complex and humane man, examines Hoffer’s charismatic appeal and the remarkable knowledge he has gained from America’s common man. Mr. Tomkins shows that everything Hoffer has written comes from a single train of thought, set in motion by the events of his life.

Thirty-nine revealing portraits by George Knight, who has been Hoffer’s close friend for the past decade, are supplemented with a collection of Hoffer’s own favorite aphorisms, which he selected from his notebooks especially for this book. Eric Hoffer, who does not intend to write his autobiography, has worked closely with Mr. Tomkins and sees this work as his life’s story.

Calvin Tomkins has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1960. He wrote his first fiction piece for the magazine in 1958, and his first fact piece in 1962. His many Profile subjects have included Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Merce Cunningham, Buckminster Fuller, Philip Johnson, Julia Child, Georgia O’Keeffe, Leo Castelli, Frank Stella, Carmel Snow, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Frank Gehry, Damien Hirst, Richard Serra, Matthew Barney, and Jasper Johns. He wrote the Art World column from 1980 to 1988. Before joining The New Yorker, he was a general editor of Newsweek, a post he held from 1957 through 1959. In 1955, he joined Newsweek as an associate editor. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including “The Bride and the Bachelors,” “Merchants and Masterpieces,” “Living Well Is the Best Revenge,” “Off the Wall,” “Duchamp: A Biography,” and “Lives of the Artists.” A revised edition of his Duchamp biography came out in 2014.
