`Scepticism and Historical Knowledge is a study of the view-held by Croce, Oakeshott, and others -that historians create or construct, rather than discover, parts of the past. This position is based in large part on scepticism about the possibility of knowing the past. Professor Meiland discusses both Historical Scepticism and the Constructionist Position, and sets forth arguments showing the latter to be a plausible and important theory of the nature of written history. Such topics as Historical Relativism, the Justification of Memory Beliefs, and the Concept of the Past are dealt with. Here the philosopher of history and the historian will find a very clear and thorough discussion of questions which are of great importance in the philosophy of history.`
