`For this companion volume to Studies in Philosophy, edited by Professor J. N. Findlay, Mr P. F. Strawson has selected and introduced ten philosophical lectures delivered to the British Academy over the last ten years. Each has been chosen for its own brilliance, rather than with a view to illustrating trends, yet several of them invite a grouping which indicates a major direction of interest in English philosophy over this period. The lectures of Gilbert Ryle, A. J. Ayer, Stuart Hampshire, David Pears, Bernard Williams, and Mr Strawson`s own can all be brought under the broad heading of Philosophy of Mind. The fact that at least two of them could equally well be classified under Ethics serves only to show how closely these two areas are linked through the ideas of action and freedom, decision and reason. Three of the remaining lectures-those by C. Lewy, G. E. L. Owen, and G. J. Warnock-provide valuable contributions to the critical history of philosophy; while that of P. T. Geach stands as a representative of another recent concern of English philosophy, that of the connection between logic, broadly conceived, and ontology.`
