The term `postmodernism` is ubiquitous in current cultural debate, but its meanings are difficult to grasp. This is in some ways consistent with the deconstructed, fragmented, fleeting versions of the world to which postmodern cultural commentators allude.

Here is a collection of documents drawn from a series of events at London`s Institute of Contemporary Arts which include contribu-tions from some of the most notable writers on the topic. They address facets of postmodernism in the theory of knowledge, the arts and architecture. Included are debates, interviews and inter-ventions by Jean-François Lyotard and Jacques Derrida, among postmodern analysts, and careful critical and expository pieces by Martin Jay, J. G. Merquior and Michael Newman (who provides an extended essay on the visual arts and a critical lexicon of terms from postmodernist discourse). The collection is unique in provid-ing an overview of the phenomenon of postmodernism.
