`INTRODUCTION
THE present essay on Balzac is an extremely important contribution to Marxist criticism. After justly praising it, D. S. Mirsky writes: `From the point of view of method Grib is the soundest critic we have.` Indeed, Grib`s methodology is of utmost significance: it is dialectical and it is based on a thorough mastery of the subject.
Balzac provides splendid material for Marxist research. The voluminous bibliography piled on the grave of this great French novelist represents not so much specialized Balzacian erudition as generalized effusions giving expression to a motley assortment of human loves and hatreds, beliefs and heresies. On Balzac`s grave the flowers are few-but thistles and brambles abound, glass ornaments and pious bric-a-brac. Like Cervantes, Goethe and Tolstoy, Balzac has been used as a springboard for the rankest spiritualistic rubbish and pernicious falsifications.
