Since his death in 1883, Marx has been revised, distorted and rediscovered. But as David McLellan shows, recent research and scholarship have provided the documentation and perspective that are enabling a more coherent picture to emerge.
This essay is a survey of Marx`s life, of his contributions to the varied fields of History, Economics and Politics, and of his subsequent interpreters by a writer whose own studies have played a major part in fostering this process of redefinition.
David McLellan is Professor of Political Theoiy at the University of Kent. He was born in Hertford in 1940, and was educated at Merchant Taylors’ School and St John’s College, Oxford. He has lectured widely in North America and on the Continent of Europe and his publications (which have been translated into many languages) include The Young Hegelians and Karl Marx (1969), Marx before Marxism (1970), Karl Marx: The Early Texts (1971), Marx’s Grundrisse(1971), The Thought of Karl Marx (1971), Karl Marx: His Life and Thought (1973) and Karl Marx: the Legacy (1983).
