Commissioned by an Egyptian viceroy to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal, Giuseppe Verdi`s opera AIDA recounts the tragic tale of the forbidden love between an Egyptian leader named Radames and his Ethiopian slave Aida. Conductor Giorgio Croci leads the Stagione d`Opera Italiana in an open-air performance of the beloved opera staged at the ancient Roman quarry St. Margarethen in 1997.
