The book presents the cultural diversity of Bulgaria through the traditions and present day cultural practices of the communities who live permanently in the country. For the first time in such a publication (alongside with other groups) there is a description of the most numerous community, the Orthodox Bulgarians.

The history of each community, facts or tales, is the foundation on which its modern image has been built. The specific cultural characteristics are studied as constructs which are the result of a specific historical, political and social context. Communities are presented as interacting with each other, learning about each other and being public together in the last decades.

The authors` previous research experience allows to see the dynamic nature of the community constructs and their interaction at a local and regional level. The accent is put on revealing how the community conceives of itself, permanent and yet different from the other communities.

The book begins with a preface making a comparative review of the various identities and communities. This panoramic picture comprises both the analysed ethnic groups as well as those that are not included in the book. The following ethnic groups, namely Armenians, Bulgarian Orthodox and Catholics, Bulgarian Muslims, Jews, Karakachans, Romany and Turks are presented in separate articles in the body of the book. Each article contains a basic text, illustrations with detailed captions and interesting short texts such as excerpts from travel notes, interviews, descriptions of festivals and other elements of the cultures of different communities, etc.
