This encyclopaedia is the result of a particularly interesting discovery voyage into a world of more than a thousand wines, a fantastic journey through dozens of different wine countries and cultures. Every year we see new wine countries and areas, as well as new wines making their apprearance, while also the consumer market is constantly changing. At the beginning of the nineties of this century, it became evident that wine was not only being produced in countries such as France, Italy, Germany, Spain and
Portugal, but also in Greece, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and former Yugoslavia, and even further away, in countries like Chile, Argentina, Australia, and in the state of California. In short, the wine world is constantly on the move.
In this book, not only red, white and rose wines pass in review, but also sparkling wines such as Champagne, and the so-called `fortified` wines, such as Sherry, Port and Manzanilla. Of all wines you can read about their origin, the way they are produced, how the grapes are grown and what combinations of grapes are possible to use for wine-making. You will also read about the importance of the climate and the type of soil, and how these factors influence the wine. And of course, also the wine preparation itself, such as fermentation and maturing, is not left undescribed. A good wine has character, and this character determines in what circumstances and at which temperature it is best to drink the wine: you will find many hints on these aspects as well.
