Introduction by Paul Fussell

The objects of this autobiography, written at the age of thirty-three, are simple enough: an opportunity for a formal good-bye to you and to you and to you and to me and to all that; forgetfulness, because once all this has been settled in my mind and written down and published it need never be thought about again; money.

`In this soldier`s story, first published in 1929, poet Robert Graves traces the monumental loss of innocence that occurred as a result of World War I. Written after the war and as Graves was leaving England - he thought, forever - Good-bye to All That bids farewell not only to his birthplace. By the year of his departure, a way of life had ended, and England and the modern world would never be the same. Tracing Graves`s upbringing through his entry into the war at age twenty-one as a patriotic captain in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, this dramatic, poignant, and often wry memoir depicts all the horrors and disillusionment of the Great War, from life in the trenches and the loss of dear friends to the absurdity of government bureaucracy.`--Jacket

his book has been described as one of the great autobiographies of the 20th century. The text was writtem when the author was about to leave England after much personal turmoil. In it the intractable experience of the First World War is digested by Graves` poetic imagination into literature. At the same time, it is one of the most candid self portraits ever drawn, while containing vivid portraits of his close friends.

`Robert Graves left his native England for Majorca in 1929, returning only infrequently to visit. But in this autobiography, written at the age of thirty-three - youth, the First World War, and Oxford behind him - Graves says goodbye to more than simply England and his English family and friends. For a way of life has ended. The nineteenth century is dead at last, and in this book - a classic of its kind - Graves gives us in parallel accounts the end of his own innocence and that of his world.`
