By repute Guitar Slim was the most over the top performer who ever picked a twelve bar blues. He may have had a short career (he died in 1959), but he sure knew how to make an impact. Just put on the title track of this compilation and imagine this guy with blue hair, blue suit and blue shoes, up on the shoulders of his valet, with a 350 foot lead running from his guitar, out in the parking lot serenading the moon, the stars, the cars on the highway and even the paying punters in the club. Now that??s showbiz! As a player he amalgamated the styles of many other players into his own unique sound-.-there were overtones of BB King, T-Bone Walker and most of all Gatemouth Brown in there. He first cut for Imperial in 1951, but real success came with his first Specialty single, `The Things I Used To Do`, cut in 53, and featuring Ray Charles on piano. It stayed on the charts for 21 weeks becoming one of the biggest R&B hits of 54. Much of his output after this featured a rather inappropriate organ overdub, but thankfully the raw takes have been discovered and used on this compilation of some wild blues from the short and meteoric career of Guitar Slim.
