Changing political systems are a way of life for many nations of the developing world, yet for societies without literacy there are no written records to illuminate existing or past political organization—a fact which can impede development. This anthology brings together both the classic and recent anthropological work on the politics of non-westernized political systems: hunting and gathering societies, uncentralized societies such as villages, and state societies. Among the authors represented are E. M. Weyer, Claude Levi-Strauss, Robert Lowie, Daryll Forde, and John Beattie.
Ronald Cohen is Associate Professor of Anthropology and Political Science at Northwestern University, where he is also a member of the Program of African Studies. John Middleton is the new Chairman of the Department of Anthropology at New York University, having taught previously at London, Capetown, and Northwestern universities. He is the author of numerous books on anthropological subjects.
American Museum Sourcebooks in Anthropology, under the general editorship of Paul Bohannan, are compiled from the writings of anthropologists, and designed to offer the student of anthropology as wide a range of ethnographic fact as possible and a coherent foundation for anthropological theory. These books are published for The American Museum of Natural History by the Natural History Press.
