Kiril Todorov , also known as Kiril Todoroff ( Bulgarian : Кирил Тодоров ?; Brest , 5 May 1902 – Rome , 5 August 1987 ), was a Bulgarian sculptor .
He was born in the village of Brest, in the municipality of Guljanci in the Principality of Bulgaria , on 5 May 1902. He completed his primary education in Brest, his middle school in Gigen and his high school in Pleven . At a young age he spent a lot of time with his grandfather, a stonemason , who must have inspired his passion for sculpture which culminated with his enrollment at the National Academy of Arts in Sofia and then in 1924 with his enrollment in the courses of Ermenegildo Luppi at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome , from which he graduated in 1928. [ 1 ] The fame of his works guaranteed him illustrious patrons, including the actors Ettore Petrolini , Douglas Fairbanks and Elena Sangro , the composers Pietro Mascagni and Ottorino Respighi as well as the poets Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Trilussa ; the Italian Ministry of Education also purchased a marble bust entitled Mia madre . [ 2 ] During his stay in Rome he met and received broad support from Andrej Nikolov , his compatriot and fellow sculptor [ 3 ] .
In 1931 he presented two marble portraits of Tsar Boris III and Tsarina Joanna , receiving a prize of10,000 levs and an official invitation as a court sculptor. [ 2 ] Also in the 1930s he created another plaster bust of Tsarina Giovanna (kept at the Royal Castle of Racconigi ) and a bust of Prince Umberto II (donated in 1987 to the Portuguese city of Cascais ). [ 4 ] While remaining in Rome, in 1934 he won a competition for the creation of a monument to Vasil Aprilov in Gabrovo , and was then called by the municipality of Varna to create another monument to Aprilov in the city. Back in Rome, the Tsar and Tsarina posed again for him to create two marble busts destined for the court of Sofia. [ 2 ]
In 1943 he held his second solo exhibition in Rome, presenting a bust of Cardinal Angelo Roncalli, former apostolic visitor to Bulgaria and future Pope John XXIII . His works received praise from several Italian and Bulgarian art critics including Arturo Lancellotti and Piero Scarpa . [ 3 ]
He returned to his homeland between 1943 and 1944, creating a bust of Soviet Marshal Fyodor Ivanovich Tolbukhin in 1946 , while in the following years he created busts of: Georgi Dimitrov , Vasil Kolarov , Lenin , Ilya Grigorevich Ehrenburg , Dimitar Blagoev , Mao Zedong and Joseph Stalin . Many of these busts were purchased by the National Gallery in Sofia; he made two busts of Stalin, one of which was purchased by the Soviet Embassy in Sofia and the other by the Stalin Museum in Moscow . [ 2 ]
In the 1960s he went to Yugoslavia at the invitation of President Josip Broz Tito , whom he visited at Christmas 1964, and created a marble bust of himself the following year. Around 1965 he returned to Italy, living and working in Rome but also travelling to various European capitals to create busts of numerous prominent personalities including: Charles de Gaulle and Georges Pompidou , Federico Fellini , Sophia Loren and Marina Vlady ; de Gaulle in particular was so amazed by his marble bust that he ordered the awarding of a gold medal to the sculptor. [ 2 ]
Todorov died, probably forgotten, on August 5, 1987 in Rome. [ 2 ]
