61017) The Beginning of the Road , Marshal Vasili Ivanovich CHUIKOV, Supreme Commander of Sovit Land Forces ; The Story of the Battle for Stalingrad
The German Panzer groups that swept through Russia in 1941 and 1942 were checked at three major points: Leningrad in the north; Moscow at the centre and Stalingrad in the south. Though the Germans entered each of these cities, none was taken. Yet of the three, only the name of Stalingrad rang round the world, as a token of massive German defeat and tremendous Russian might. Hitler`s power ebbed away in the frozen steppe, even while his men fought within sight of the River Volga. Among the black factory shells of Stalingrad his mightiest army lay down its arms, broken, confused, ruined.

There is a myth in the West that the Germans were beaten by climate and great hordes of Russian troops. Man for man, it is suggested, the Germans were superior, and only the madness of Hitler`s tactics led to the defeat of the German generals. In this book that myth is exploded. In close detail, Marshal Chuikov shows that after their first setbacks the Russian armies showed equal bravery and more skill than the enemy. The Russian Command brilliantly out-generalled and outfought armies that had become fat with victory. When the tide turned, as it did most dramatically at Stalingrad, the Germans were pursued back to Berlin itself.

Fighting in sewers, from rubble and from holes in the frozen earth, the Russian soldiers kept their precarious hold on the banks of the Volga. From over the river came supplies and reinforce- ments; across the ice in winter and by savagely- attacked ferry in spring. For the first time perhaps the Russians showed how a shattered city could be made to engulf a mighty enemy force. Only the gigantic slaughter of Verdun in the First War is comparable to the deeds of Stalingrad. By their ferocious resistance, the Russians were able to inflict the greatest defeat any army suffered at one place during the last war. Here, for the first time, is the full story of those bitter days.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Marshal Vasili Chuikov was born of a peasant family. He fought in the Russian Civil War and also against the Poles (1918-1920), when he held a junior command. He was chief military adviser to Chiang Kaishek in 1941 and is at present Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Land Forces. He is also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party.

In September 1942 Chuikov was offered the command of the 62nd Army at Stalingrad by General Yeremenko and Nikita Khrushchev, then Stalin`s political deputy in the area. The previous Commander of the 62nd Army had told Khrushchev that Stalingrad could not be defended but Chuikov accepted the command and swore not to leave Stalingrad. `We will defend the city`, he said, `or we shall die there.` Throughout the battle, Chuikov`s determination and promise were kept alive until the final triumph.
