THE FRENCH REVOLUTION
Voices from a momentous epoch: 1789-1795
General editor: Richard Cobb Editor: Colin Jones
Here is the story of that `great dawn’, the French Revolution, in the words of its supporters, victims and bystanders. Through letters, diaries and journals, chroniclers of all classes recount the terrible, glorious — and ludicrous — events of one of the most crucial epochs in history.
We witness the terror of the Terror; the guillotine cutting short one voice after another the departure of the Volunteers, the royal family`s abortive flight from Paris, `Pimpernels’ and British and American sympathisers, heroes and lesser men of the time, and the rise of an obscure Corsican artilleryman named Napoleon Bonaparte . . .
Much of the vast quantity of correspondence surviving from the French revolutionary period has never been available in English before. This book gives it pride of place, supported by colour and black and white illustrations, mainly from contemporary sources, and modern historical essays elucidating the many complex and often contradictory elements that made up the Revolution. Ultra-radical Parisian sansculottes, ultra-Catholic Vendeans and every shade of opinion in between had their different views of the events of the day; and now they have been given their`, voice.
From Burke and Carlyle to Marx and Lenin, the French Revolution has exercised a fascination on the minds of historians, philosophers, politicians and radicals. Now find out how actual eye-witnesses saw it.
RICHARD COBB, hailed as `a legend on both sides of the Channel. . . the world’s leading authority on the French Revolution’ {The Sunday Times), is the author of celebrated academic studies of French history including The People’s Armies, Reactions to the French Revolution and Paris and its Provinces 1792-1802. His equally celebrated accounts of the life and character of the French include Promenades, People and Places and A Second Identity. A former Professor of Modern History at Oxford University, he is a Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur and was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1978.
COLIN JONES is Senior Lecturer in the Department of History, University of Exetei; Devon, and a director of the Western European Studies Centre at the university. A former visiting Fellow at Princeton University (1986), his publications include The Longman Companion to the French Revolution.
