Blue Note continues its stellar compilation ways on this Latin jazz sampler, spotlighting both stateside jazzers and salsa kings. The focus is on the `60s and early `70s and the boogaloo rarely loses its sophisticated dance groove over the course of the collection`s 14 tracks. On the jazz end of the spectrum, Blue Note stalwart Bobby Hutcherson is tapped for a few tasty sides, while Les McCann, Charles Kynard, Buddy Collette, the Jazz Crusaders, and Clare Fischer all deliver fine work. For somewhat more `authentic` fare, Latin stars via New York like Machito, Candido, Jack Costanzo, and Willie Bobo bring the home-cooked flavors to the fore. A fine disc for Latin jazz newbies.
