September 1939: Hitler`s invasion of Poland finally forced a reluctant Britain to declare war on Germany. The RAF was busy reequipping with its new monoplane fighters, the Hurricane and Spitfire. After an overwhelming defeat in the Battle of France, it was these aircraft which were to become immortalised in the Battle of Britain. The basis of these great fighters and many other classic wartime designs was the extraordinary Rolls-Royce Merlin engine.
In North Africa tank-busting `Hurri-bombers` and Lend-Lease Curtiss P-40s helped to turn the tide of the German advance, while at sea British air arms were active in the Mediterranean, the North Atlantic and the Far East. Antiquated Fairey Swordfish took part in some of the most successful and famous torpedo raids of the war such as Taranto, while Coastal Command`s Catalinas, Sunderlands and Liberators were influential in negating the U-boat threat.
In the Far East, initial Japanese advances were countered, against overwhelming odds, by obsolete types such as the Brewster Buffalo. However, by 1944, aircraft carriers loaded with US-supplied Corsairs, Hellcats and Avengers were wreaking havoc on the enemy at sea.
Back in the the streamlined aviation industry produced the famous trio of fourengined bombers: the Lancaster, Halifax and Stirling. These aircraft mounted devastating night operations against the heart of Germany`s industry and communications as well as its major cities.
British Warplanes of World War Il describes every aircraft that reached operational units with UK forces, from trainers and civilian impressed aircraft to the famous fighters and bombers of front-line units. Featuring rare wartime photographs and spectacular artworks, this volume is the most complete reference work yet produced on this subject.

— Complete descriptions of the front-line aircraft, trainers and important experimental types employed by the RAF and Fleet Air Arm during World War Il, with comprehensive development histories, variant descriptions and specifications. Includes impressed types.
— Detailed cutaway drawings of the major types provide an insight into these famous flying and fighting machines.
— Colour three-view drawings and profiles depict the varied colour schemes and markings which adorned British aircraft in theatres of war around the globe.
— Each aircraft description is illustrated, often with photographs depicting the individual variants.
