The Serbian people has many well-known monasteries and many saints, but St Vasilije and Ostrog are something special. St Vasilije`s image is compared to `the light of the sun`; he is `the mirror of the Serbian land`, for he brings freedom from `the enslavement to sin`. `Up to the present day the memory of the Saint of Ostrog has shined like the bright Sun`!
Pilgrims; who came from all regions; in good and bad weather, by day and night, in summer and winter, harbour a profound belief that whatever is touched by and united with St Vasilije is also united with God, and by that very fact preserved and saved. They believe that the power of prayer is greatest at Ostrog and therefore they chose this place for their baptisms, marriages, burial and commemoration services.
People unable to visit Ostrog for some reason used to go, especially on great feast days, to a neighbouring hill from which the Upper Monastery could be seen, and prayed to St Vasilije facing the monastery.
