The Hermitage, one of the world`s major museums, houses numerous collections of Western European art. Preserved here are the magnificent collections of paintings, sculpture, prints and drawings, and applied art. The works assembled over nearly 225 years furnish an ample idea of the development of art in Western European countries. Especially significant is the collection of thirteenth- to twentieth-century art, totalling about paintings.
