`About this Volume. Most bird books help the reader to identify the birds he sees in the field. This book is the ideal companion volume to any such guide for it describes, not the external appearance of birds, but the lives they lead. In an authoritative but easily understood text the author discusses how and why birds under- take their incredible migrations, the function of birdsong, the reasons why curious patterns of behaviour such as the courtship rituals of the Great Crested Grebe have evolved, the nesting habits of the Bowerbirds and Weaverbirds, the territorial behaviour of the Reed Warbler, and many other topics.

The author begins with a discussion of the crucial question of how birds manage to fly. He then goes on to consider the seemingly anomalous fact that some birds, like the emu or the dodo, cannot fly at all. The rest of the book is devoted to the daily activities of birds and to the causation of these activities. It deals with instinct and learning, feeding habits, territorial behaviour, bird-song, courtship, nesting and migration, and many other facets of bird life.`
