MORIN specialised in the field of high precision measuring instruments but offered also a large variety of widely used smaller compasses.
The most well known were the so called `boussoles directrices` (Marching compasses) used during WW I.
The original workshop was created in 1826 by Louis Toussaint TOURLY (1802-1869), jeweller, manufacturing compasses and survey equipment from about 1870 on after it was taken over in 1866 by Henri Isidore HOULLIOT (picture at left), his son-in-law. The latter`s son (Albert) had a sister whose son Charles Collignon joined the company in the 1930s. Albert Houlliot died in 1940 w/o direct heirs and his wife Marie née Maynard died in 1941.
Houlliot was the unnamed manufacturer of most compasses sold by major French companies like Société des Lunetiers (S-L), Vion, Secrétan, Topochaix, Huet, LAT (Les Accessoires Topographiques), Morin etc. but he also exported his products in the whole world (USA, Russia, LUFFT in Germany).
`LOST`:
The compass: It’s one of mankind’s most rudimentary tools, but also one of its most essential. And in the “Lost” mythology, it bounces around time like a ragdoll. In episodal time, the compass first appears in 1961 when Richard Alpert lays out various items in front of a 5-year-old John Locke, and asks him to identify “which of these things belong to you already.” John correctly claims the compass, but Richard doesn’t yet give it to him. Next, in 1977, Richard does give the compass to John -- but tells him to give it back the next time they see each other. Little did John expect that this next time would be in 1954!
