Raids and Reconstructions: Essays on Politics, Crime, and Culture. Hans Magnus Enzensberger.
Pluto Press, 1976, 312 pages.
Hans Magnus Enzensberger conies from a powerful intellectual tradition which scrutinises not only the answers given to the social and political questions of the day, but the questions themselves.
He is a leading poet, essayist and polemicist living in Berlin.
A member of the post-war generation of writers he has had to come to grips with some of the fundamental issues of our age: how to explain the rise of terrorism — which he does in a brilliant two-part essay Dreamers of the Absolute: how to explain state dictatorship of the right or the authoritarianism of the left in power — which he does in Rafael Trujillo: Portrait of a Father of the People (translated into English for the first time) and Portrait of a Party on the Cuban Communist Party.
Enzensberger deals with mental strait-jacketing and revolt in The Industrialisation of the Mind and Towards a Theory of Treason; with the nature of crime in Reflections before a Glass Cage; with the nature of official propaganda in Constituents of a Theory of the Media: and with the debate on ecology in A Critique of Political Ecology. He deals openly with the shortcomings of the left in Tourists of the Revolution.
This selection of essays spans a decade of Enzensberger’s writings. It has been selected by the author himself and translated by him and by Stuart Hood, Michael Roloff, and Richard Woolley.
