An excellent study of the Gallipoli catastrophe. Higgins focuses on the `war in Whitehall ` of 1915 and the failures in the political direction of the War.Higgins` treatment of Fisher is very perceptive ( following the theme offered by this famous quote: ` So Jacky`s growing roses, is he? Well, all I`ve got to say is that those roses will damned well have to grow `. ) Higgings also does a good job in documenting the importance of the Dardanelles over time to the British, witness Lord Salisbury to Lord Randolph Churchill (1886): ` You are naturally sarcastic about my Dardanelles, and I hope the matter will not come up in our time.I consider the loss of Constantinople would be the ruin of our party and a heavy blow to the country `.
